‘Lost Weekend’ Lyrics & Meaning: Phoebe Bridgers Fans Think One Lyric Confirms Paul Mescal Engagement Rumors

Phoebe Bridgers is explaining the story behind the title track of her brand new album, Lost Weekend.
The 32-year-old singer-songwriter just released her latest studio album on Friday (August 14), and fans are going line by line through the lyrics to explore the meaning of her latest project.
Phoebe herself has provided some insight into the title track, “Lost Weekend.”
“This song is about the past, which it’s been pointed out to me that every song is about the past. It’s about losing touch with the person who knows me best and just feeling lost, which is why it’s called that,” she explained on the radio.
“I was in an altered state one morning when I recorded this. I just finished writing it, and I just threw my phone on the mellotron and recorded it. Then I took the song into the studio. Nothing felt as real as that first voice memo, so we just recorded over it. There’s a sample of a piece by Paul Lansky at the end, which is one of my favorite parts of the record because I’ve loved that piece for a long time.”
The title also references the original 1944 novel, which was adapted into a 1945 movie, about the desperate life of a chronic alcoholic followed through a four-day drinking bout.
“Surviving my gift until I get shot,” she declares.
Fans believe that she’s likely referencing the murder of John Lennon, who she previously declared was “easily” the best member of The Beatles and described as one of her heroes. The title is also the name that he gave the nearly two year-long split from Yoko Ono from 1973 to 1975 before they romantically reconciled.

“I’m supposed to be married, but I called it off / I’ve been known to throw a tantrum / When things are not the way I imagine them,” she continues.
Phoebe notably dated Paul Mescal from 2020 to 2022, and there were engagement rumors prior to their split. The line about being married seemingly suggests that was true at one point.
“This song has like 700 verses in it, but these ended up being my favorite ones. There were versions of the song where every single lyric was funny and wasn’t a song, but that’ll always be precious to me. My tome of a phone note of this song is insane,” she further explained on Pandora’s The Stack.
Find out which song is seemingly about current boyfriend Bo Burnham.
