Three years before Hayden Panettiere passed away, her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died.

The 36-year-old late actress’ only sibling died suddenly in February 2023, nearly three and a half years ago.

Jansen was also an actor, and the siblings starred in two projects together, 2004’s Tiger Cruise, and in Racing Stripes a year later.

How did Jansen Panettiere pass away?

A week after his death, the Panettiere family released a statement, confirming the 28-year-old’s official cause of death.

“Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit,” his family, including mom Lesley Vogel, dad Skip Panettiere, and sister, Hayden, said in a statement.

The family continued, “His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.”

“Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen‘s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications,” the family shared. “We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and support towards our family as we navigate this unthinkable loss, and ask that we be gifted our privacy during this time of mourning. We love you so much Jansen and you will be in our hearts forever.”

Before the cause of death was revealed, it was reported that Jansen was supposed to attend a meeting, and after he didn’t show, his friends told the police they were concerned, and someone went to check on him at his apartment.

TMZ reported that a friend “found him sitting upright in a chair, unresponsive, called 911 and started CPR.”

A couple of weeks after his death, Hayden teared up in her first interview while promoting her new movie Scream VI.

“He’s right here with me,” she said emotionally, choking up, after the interviewer, Michael Strahan, offered his condolences.

Later that year, she commemorated what would have been his 29th birthday.

“Happy Birthday little brother. I miss you everyday. I’ll love you forever,” she captioned a childhood photo of them sitting in front of the Christmas tree.
