The renewal comes shortly after the 10-episode series premiered Sept. 24 and introduced viewers to a new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest, led by Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon), the free-spirited youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison).

“We love y’all. We appreciate y’all, and we can’t wait to return to Hillman!” she continued before asking, “We watching this weekend in celebration???!!!”

Similarly, Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original A Different World and returned as a director and executive producer of the new series, had her own reason to celebrate.

“YAY! HALLELUJAH! The people and NETFLIX have spoken,” Allen said in the press release. “A Different World brought something everybody needed: joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and HEART!”

“Thank you for getting us into the Top 10 worldwide!” she added. “And now, gear up! We’re coming back at you with Season 2!!”

On Instagram, she gave the show’s worldwide Hillman family its flowers for helping secure another season.

“Global Family, Season 2 is Coming! 🔥💋❤️ Y’all showed up and showed OUT for #ADifferentWorld! 🙏🏽✨ THANK YOU!!!!” she wrote.

Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s vice president of comedy series, also praised the response to Hillman’s newest class.

“We are so excited to see how audiences around the world have embraced the next chapter of this beloved series,” Pakosta said in a statement. “We believed in this incredible team from day one, and can’t wait to see what unfolds next year at Hillman College.”

What Will A Different World Season 2 Be About?

According to Netflix, Season 2 picks up after “transformative summers” for Deborah and her classmates, who return to campus for sophomore year with a “New Year, New Me” attitude.

The streamer says the Hillmanites will find themselves facing past decisions and uncertain futures while navigating new loves, friendships, and deeper questions of purpose. Naturally, in between enjoying HBCU college life, they’ll get themselves into “a whole lot of new mess.”

Deborah will return alongside her eclectic crew of classmates, including Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first-generation criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a five-star athlete focused on his family legacy; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a psychology major who’s great at solving everyone else’s problems but his own; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a small-town church girl defining her own values; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur determined to chase his creative vision.

Season 1 also welcomed several familiar faces back to the Yard, including Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison as Whitley and Dwayne, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson. It’s unclear how much of the legacy class will return, and fans are hoping to see Lisa Bonet reprise her role as Denise Huxtable.

Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date for Season 2, but Hillmanites can officially consider their sophomore-year enrollment secured.
