David Henrie Disputes Jake T. Austin’s Claim About ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Revival, Says He Was Invited Back

David Henrie is disputing Jake T. Austin‘s claim that he was not invited back for the Wizards of Waverly Place revival series.

Jake, 31, claimed he was “disappointed” to “have not been included” in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place ahead of the show’s final four episodes premiering in Disney+ the first week of August, adding that he was “100% in” to return as Max.

He claimed he was “100% in” to return as Max Russo, who was the younger brother of David‘s character Justin Russo and Selena Gomez‘s Alex Russo.

“Unfortunately, the powers that be decided to take the show in a different direction and my character wasn’t part of the equation,” he added in his own Instagram Stories.

On Friday (August 7), David took to his Instagram Stories to post a thread of messages that indicate things might have played out differently. The screenshots appear to show David‘s response to fans curious about Max’s absence.

“I woulda loved to have Max back but sadly he didn’t accept our numerous offers to join the new show,” David, who is also an executive producer on the revival, claimed in one of the posts (via Entertainment Weekly). “We called him, texted, went through agents etc. I would have loved for this new generation of millions of kids to get to meet Max, but I respect his decision and wish him all the best!”

In another, he wrote, “Trust me I am heart broken more than you! We invited him many many many times to come back. Wished he would’ve accepted. We had a beautiful plot for Max’s returned all mapped out. In fact we built the entire 2nd season around his return and were gutted that he didn’t accept.”

Over on X, one of the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place showrunners, Scott Thomas, responded to a fan’s Selena updates account to back up David‘s claims.

“Hey there! I’m one of the Wizards showrunners so I can confirm that David Henrie is correct. Jake was asked multiple times by many people. Really wanted him back. No response. Also asked David D. to return for the finale. He passed,” Scott replied.
