Does the Dog Die in ‘The Last House’? Netflix Movie Spoilers Revealed

The new horror movie The Last House is now streaming on Netflix and there’s one burning question you might have right after you start the movie: does the dog die?

As the movie begins, we’re introduced to a family going about their day while preparing to leave the house and enjoy a night out together. When they try to leave the house, they realize that every door and window is sealed shut and there’s no way to get out. They’re stuck inside, with their dog, and must work together to survive against both their dwindling resources and the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped.

Whenever there is a dog involved in a post-apocalyptic or horror movie, one major question is, will it survive? We have your answers, but beware of spoilers if you read further.

What happens to the dog in The Last House?

Unfortunately, yes, the dog dies.

After several months of being trapped inside their house, the family runs out of their dog Cassidy’s heart medicine. She unfortunately falls ill and is clearly in pain. We also learn that the dog was elderly and didn’t have much time left to begin with. Jason (Wagner Moura) makes the decision to end Cassidy’s suffering by taking her into the garage and shooting her with their gun.

Jason also makes the devastating decision to cut up Cassidy’s body and put the meat into the freezer, just in case they reach the point where they’re so desperate for food that they need to eat the dog.

At the very end of the movie, when the family finally escapes from their house, we see that they’ve named their boat “Cassidy” to honor her.
