Why Whitney Cummings’ Trump Joke Was Removed From Bill Maher’s Netflix Special

Whitney Cummings made a joke about President Donald Trump during the taping of this year’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony honoring late night host Bill Maher, but it was cut from the final product.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, it was not Netflix’s fault that her Trump joke was cut.

Whitney‘s actual joke has gone on viral online. In the clip she jokes, “I actually heard Trump may come tonight, but he couldn’t make it. He got caught in sex traffic.”

The 43-year-old comedian talked about the cut joke on her podcast Good For You, saying the venue where the taping took place, The Kennedy Center, said it needed to be “cut from broadcast.”

“The people at the venue have been amazing. They don’t want to silence anyone. It’s true that their boss is Donald Trump. They did their job,” she explained. “The joke was already leaked by someone that was in the audience, a journalist or something. It was already in People magazine … But then they said, ‘We need to cut it from the broadcast.’ I’m like, ‘Well, it’s already out there.’ Who cares?”

A Netflix spokesperson confirmed the same thing.

“While it’s our preference not to cut jokes from anyone’s set, The Kennedy Center has the contractual right to do so.”

Later, Whitney followed up on X on Tuesday (July 21) to confirm it was not Netflix who cut the joke.

“I was super clear that Netflix did not cut anything from my Mark Twain prize set. Netflix always supports comedy and comics. Quit spreading rumors ya weirdos,” she wrote.

Trump has been a topic of discussion this week after he inserted himself into Spain’s victory celebration upon winning the 2026 World Cup.
