The Gentlemen Season 2 has arrived on Netflix, and the finale answers some major questions while setting up the already confirmed third season.

All eight episodes of the hit series’ second season debuted on Thursday (September 3), with Theo James returning as Eddie Horniman alongside Kaya Scodelario as Susie Glass.

After a season filled with betrayals and a devastating death, viewers finally learn who was behind Bella’s murder and just how far Eddie is willing to go for revenge.

SPOILER ALERT: Stop reading now if you haven’t finished The Gentlemen Season 2!

Who Killed Bella in The Gentlemen Season 2?

Gospel John (Pearce Quigley) and Eddie’s brother Freddy (Daniel Ings) were behind the conspiracy that led to Bella’s death.

Throughout the season, Gospel John manipulates Freddy by exploiting his resentment toward Eddie, who inherited the Halstead title and estate instead of him.

Freddy eventually admits that he knew what Gospel John was planning and helped him. The plot against Eddie also included the attack on Halstead Manor and attempted kidnapping of his baby nephew Tarquin.

Bella (Benedetta Porcaroli) had married Eddie shortly before her death. As she flies overhead in a seaplane following their wedding, the plane explodes in front of Eddie.

Lead writer and executive producer Matthew Read explained that the writers deliberately wanted the betrayal to come from someone close to Eddie rather than another outside enemy.

“We thought that bringing it back closer to home would be a more shocking and impactful kind of revelation,” he told Netflix’s Tudum.

What Happens to Freddy & Gospel John?

After discovering Freddy’s involvement, Eddie beats his brother and pulls a gun on him, but ultimately decides not to kill him.

Instead, Eddie reveals that Gospel John is tied up inside a van with a chainsaw and orders Freddy inside.

The doors close and the sound of a chainsaw can be heard. When they reopen, Freddy emerges covered in blood holding Gospel John’s severed head.

That’s where Season 2 ends.

Theo explained that Eddie’s decision allows him to punish both men simultaneously: he gets revenge on Gospel John while forcing Freddy to personally confront his role in Bella’s death, saying Eddie “almost psychologically castrates his brother whilst enacting a horrific revenge on the perpetrator of his wife’s death.”

The finale also demonstrates just how much Eddie has changed since the beginning of the series.

“I would hope that the question is more about what Eddie becomes, that he would do something as strange as this,” Matthew said, questioning whether Eddie has “gone mad” or is becoming ruthless enough to lead a criminal empire.

Where Do Eddie & Susie Stand at the End of Season 2?

Despite everything that happens, Eddie and Susie end Season 2 closer than ever, although their ambitions may eventually put them at odds.

Matthew said their “affection and connection always comes through” and believes they’re “probably closer than ever at the end of Season 2.”

However, Susie is also beginning to establish a criminal operation independent of her father Bobby (Ray Winstone) and Eddie.

Kaya explained that “by the very end, she realizes that she can’t be under her father’s name anymore, that she needs to branch out on her own, and that she can’t rely on Eddie to be her partner anymore.”

What Does the Ending Mean for The Gentlemen Season 3?

Luckily, fans already know the story will continue: Netflix renewed The Gentlemen for Season 3 before Season 2 even premiered.

The finale leaves the show’s major players heading in different directions.

Bobby wants to expand the Glass empire across Europe, Eddie appears ready to return to the business but refuses to work under anyone else’s control, and Susie is quietly building relationships and supply lines of her own.

Meanwhile, the consequences of Freddy’s brutal final act remain to be seen.
