Steven Spielberg Taking Bigger Role in Next 'Transformers' Movie, Michael Bay in Talks to Direct

Steven Spielberg is reportedly overseeing the next live-action Transformers movie!

A new report suggests that the legendary Jaws and E.T. director will “focus on all creative aspects” of the next movie along with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Michael Bay is in “early talks” to come back as the director.

What Is Happening With the Eighth Transformers Live-Action Movie?

Deadline reported Tuesday (October 6) that Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are moving forward with the next Transformers movie, and that Steven will not only be executive producer once again, but will also “lead the creative direction” for the eighth live-action movie in the multi-billion dollar franchise.

It’s not the first time he’s had an expanded role on a Transformers movie: Deadline reports he held a similar creative role for the first two movies in the franchise.

“Together, Spielberg and di Bonaventura will guide this new chapter to honor the spirit of the early Transformers films,” Deadline reports.

There are no details regarding a cast or a plot for the movie, which is still reportedly in early development, although it is said to be set in modern day.

Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay Reportedly Met to Discuss the New Movie

Following the Skydance merger, Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg reportedly “made it a priority to breathe new life into the franchise,” and set a meeting with Steven to discuss the future of Transformers.

He reportedly agreed to an increased creative role in the next movie after reading the latest script draft by writer Jason Fuchs.

Similarly, Michael reportedly became interested in returning after reading the script and meeting with Steven earlier this week, and is now in early talks to direct.

The first live-action film was released in 2007, and the most recent installment was 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The animated movie Transformers One was released in 2024.

The Transformers community also sadly just lost a huge star.
