King Harald V of Norway has died.

On Friday (August 28), the Royal Palace in Oslo confirmed that the Norwegian monarch died “peacefully” at 6:35 am local time at the Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet. He was 89-years-old.

“It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away,” the palace shared in a statement.

The royal flag on the roof of the palace was lowered to half-staff to mark the King’s passing.

Harald‘s death comes after he was hospitalized last week for a rare blood condition.

Crown Prince Haakon becomes King of Norway

The monarch is immediately succeed by his only son, Crown Prince Haakon, 53. Haakon‘s eldest child, 22-year-old Princess Ingrid Alexandra, is now heir to the thrown.

Harald ruled for 35 years after he acceded to the throne on January 17, 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V.

Along with Haakon, Harald is survived by his wife Queen Sonja and daughter Princess Märtha Louise.
