Jared Leto Documentary Director Shares Theory on Why He Hasn’t Been Held Accountable

Alice McShane, the director of the new documentary Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret, is commenting on why she believes the actor’s career hasn’t appeared to be much affected by the sexual misconduct allegations against him.

AirMail previously published several accusations in 2025 in which nine accusers claimed Leto had pursued them, some while they were underage, in the mid-to-late 2000s. There wasn’t much public fallout surrounding the report, and now a little over a year later, the BBC broadcast McShane’s documentary, which she collaborated on with the AirMail reporter Elena Clavarino and BBC producer Jessica Sartenaer.

The documentary features 10 women’s stories and it was broadcast in the U.K. on Thursday.

McShane then sat down with Variety to talk about the documentary, touching on the fact that the allegations do not appear to have impacted Leto‘s career much. The 30 Seconds to Mars frontman starred in Masters of the Universe earlier this year and in Disney’s Tron: Ares last year.

“It’s quite a mystery, isn’t it? There’s something about our culture at the moment — I think there’s something that I feel might be happening 10 years on from #MeToo,” the filmmaker said when asked about it.

She continued, “It just feels like the outrage about stories like this has slightly cooled, and I think that also with the rise of the manosphere, and also people in very significant positions of power having had allegations leveled at them as well about their treatment of women, I think that in a way, these sorts of stories have been normalized in people’s minds, and I just don’t think that they get the traction perhaps that they would have done 10 years ago.” 

McShane also directed Russell Brand: In Plain Sight, an investigative documentary chronicling the accusations made against the British comedian. Brand is now facing criminal charges.

In light of the documentary, past tweets from Dylan Sprouse and James Gunn about Jared Leto have resurfaced.

She further explained her thoughts on the difference in treatment between Brand and Leto, saying, “I also think with Leto, he’s cultivated this persona of this kind of weird, enigmatic, mysterious guy, and I think, in a way, that sort of shielded him from accountability.

“I think that there is an element of ‘pretty’ privilege here, and that that actually came through in a lot of the interviews with the women,” McShane added.

Leto releases a statement denying the claims, McShane responds

Leto has denied the claims, releasing the following statement through his reps.

“I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”

Variety followed up with McShane about her thoughts on the statement. She previously said they had no received any response whatsoever throughout the documentary filming process, that it was “radio silence across the board” from the actor and his team.

“We still have not [directly] had a response to the allegations that we put to him. So who knows what’s going to happen? We may get a letter. We may never get a letter. He may take us to court. He may not take us to court. But whatever eventuality that comes, we are prepared,” McShane concluded.
