Hugh Laurie Defends Sophie Cunningham’s Comments About Trans Athletes, Says ‘I Don’t Believe Men Should Compete Against Women’

Hugh Laurie is voicing his support for Sophie Cunningham.

Last month, the 29-year-old WNBA player doubled down on her views against trans athletes, saying, that she wants to “protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Then on August 9, Hugh, 67, responded to a post on X shared by writer and trans activist Graham Linehan.

“Firstly, f–k off; secondly no, I don’t believe men should compete against women. I thought I’d made that pretty clear. If you’d looked. But obviously you must get onto your next…” the House actor wrote. Graham‘s original post has been deleted so the context is unknown.

Graham responded to Hugh, writing in a since-deleted tweet, “Why ‘f–k off’ then? Just say that you support Sophie Cunningham in her fight for fair sports and stop trying to be arch.”

Hugh once again responded, “You started it. ‘Cowardly’ to ‘f–k off’ is the going rate of exchange around here. And yes, I support Sophie Cunningham. And you, some of the time.”

After making it clear that he does not support trans athletes, many took to X to slam Hugh for his views.

However, the Emmy-nominated actor did get some praise for his tweets, with one person writing, “Thank you Hugh Laurie for being one of the few sane people in this controversy. It is shocking and insane that anyone thinks men belong in women’s sports. I liked you before, but respect you even more for your stance and comments. THANK YOU SIR!”
