The first movie in the Game of Thrones universe is currently in the works and here’s everything we know about it so far!
The original TV series launched on HBO back in 2011 and ran for eight seasons before wrapping up in 2019. Prequel series House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuted on the network in 2022 and 2026, respectively.
Now, Warner Bros. is working on a feature film that will be based on the first chapters of George R.R. Martin‘s book “Fire & Blood.”
All about Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest
The movie was originally announced back in April 2026 during a panel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
On September 29, 2026, Warner Bros. shared some additional news. The movie is going to be released in theaters everywhere on June 1, 2029.
Director and writer revealed
Owen Harris will direct the film. He previously directed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. His other TV credits include Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Black Mirror, and Brave New World. His only movie credit is 2015’s Kill Your Friends.
Beau Willimon will write the script. He’s the creator of Netflix’s House of Cards and Hulu’s The First. He also served as a writer on Disney+’s Andor. His movie credits include The Ides of March and Mary Queen of Scots.
What will the movie be about?
“Fire & Blood” is a book released in 2018 that tells the history of House Targaryen. Aegon’s Conquest is one section of the book.
If you are not up on the lore in GoT, Aegon I Targaryen was the founder of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros and the first king to rule from the Iron Throne.
With the help of his sisters, Visenya Targaryen and Rhaenys Targaryen, and their dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes, he conquered most of the Seven Kingdoms and united them under one crown. His conquest changed the history of Westeros and established the Targaryens as one of its most powerful royal families.
