Dermot Mulroney Breaks His Silence Following News He’s Leaving ‘Chicago Fire’

Dermot Mulroney is speaking out for the first time following news he’s leaving Chicago Fire.
If you didn’t see the news, it was announced last week that the 62-year-old actor will be exiting the the NBC drama series early in the upcoming 15th season.
Dermot, who first joined Chicago Fire in season 13 as Chief Dom Pascal, will wrap up his storyline early in the new season, which premieres in October.

While appearing at Flashback Weekend, Dermot said that he will soon be finished filming Chicago Fire, revealing that he will only be appearing in one episode next season.
“I loved every minute of it, became friends with this incredible crew of people. Some of them had been there 15 years,” Dermot said in a video from a panel. “… I had 10 episodes last season, their season 14, so I still got to continue. They gave me incredibly challenging scenes — if some of you saw that season 13 I was in.”
Dermot went on to reflect on his character’s tragic storyline in season 13, and how a family death in the show stayed with his character well into later episodes.
“It starts to feel really heavy,” Dermot said, comparing it to filming a movie. “They asked that of me and I delivered.”

He added, “Now, this season, sadly, I have one episode. I finish on Tuesday and they write the character off. So we gave it our all for two seasons. They wrote an incredible storyline that put me as an actor in high challenge. So I loved every minute of it. Thanks for asking. [I’m] sad to see it go.”
Dermot also described what his role on the show has meant to “first responders everywhere,” not just in Chicago.
“[I hear] how much these — all three shows — mean to those people, to their families,” Dermot shared. “I can’t tell you how many people come up and they’d much rather have an autograph on Scream VI, but they’re Chief Pascal for their dad. It’s an amazing thing to see and that’s how meaningful that is. Which makes it that much more, I won’t say bittersweet. It’s bitter to have to leave that.”
News of Dermot Mulroney‘s exit from Chicago Fire comes just days after it was announced that one of the original stars of the show was also leaving.
Season 15 of Chicago Fire premieres on Wednesday, October 7 at 9pm ET on NBC.
