Danny Boyle Confirms AI Was Used in New Movie ‘INK,’ Explains How It Was Used and How Much AI Appears in the Film

Danny Boyle is opening up about using AI in his new movie INK.

The 69-year-old Oscar-winning director helmed the upcoming Netflix film, which just debuted at the Venice Film Festival this past week.

Following the Venice premiere, Danny headed back to the US to attend the Telluride Film Festival, where he talked about the use of AI in movies.

Danny Boyle shares his opinion on using AI in films

“My opinion of it is that it’s a very useful tool in many ways, provided you use it respectfully and provided you pay actors,” he told Vanity Fair. “If you’re going to replace them with some kind of AI embodiments or something like that. So just like with any animation project or just as part of the VFX toolbox.”

He then shared that there are about 30 seconds of AI used in his upcoming movie INK, which stars Guy Pearce, Claire Foy, and Jack O’Connell.

“There’s about 30 seconds of it in our movie, where we animate a couple of old photographs, which you’ll have seen online the way that it does that — that you can bring old photographs to life. And that’s the kind of way we use it,” Danny shared.

“There’s some mice. It’s very good for animals,” he added. “I got in trouble with PETA. We had some chimps at the beginning of 28 Days Later. And they wrote to me and said, ‘You must never do that again.’ And I haven’t. Ever since, I’ve tried to use CG, as they call it, animals. But AI is very, very good at creating animals. We got some mice in this one that run around ‘The Sun’ newsroom.”

INK is “an explosive cinematic rollercoaster about a group of visionaries and misfits who had an idea for a new kind of news — one that would give the people what they want and would change the face of the world we live in today.”

The movie, written by James Graham, is set to hit theaters on December 11th and begins streaming on Netflix on January 8, 2027, in the US and Latin America.
