Chadwick Boseman‘s brothers are speaking out to explain why they are suing their late brother’s widow, Taylor Simone Ledward.

The late actor’s brothers, Derrick and Kevin, filed a lawsuit this week over funds from Boseman’s estate, alleging that she has not distributed assets properly. They are seeking to remove her as the administrator of his estate.

What we already knew about the Boseman family case

In 2022, it was said that Taylor would receive half of Chadwick‘s estate, while his parents would receive the other half, including “money from movie residuals and royalties, his image and intellectual property rights, investments, insurance policies, bank accounts, and personal belongings.”

Kevin and Derrick have claimed that Taylor has left their entire family in the dark about his estate following a 2022 court order placing her in charge of handling the financial matters of his estate as he did not have a will.

The late actor’s brothers say that Taylor has yet to transfer a long-term care insurance policy to their mother, as well as properly distribute money from his various bank accounts, SAG-AFTRA residual payments earned after his passing, and collect and distribute unclaimed property belonging to Chadwick, per TMZ.

Kevin and Derrick claim that this has left their parents “without funds and insurance they are entitled to, prevented them from pursuing business opportunities involving Chadwick‘s legacy, caused emotional distress and allowed Taylor to continue to solely profit from Chadwick‘s name and image.”

The brothers say Taylor is fully aware of this, and they have made multiple pleas to her to get it sorted out.

New statement released by the brothers

Derrick and Kevin have released a statement to People, saying that “for years, our parents have sought clarity regarding matters connected to the estate of our brother, Chadwick Boseman, including his intellectual property and legacy. This action was filed on behalf of, and with the authority of, our parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, who assigned their respective interests in the estate to Boseman Family LLC.”

“Our family was unaware, until recently, that nearly four years after the Court’s October 4, 2022 Order for Final Distribution, the Administrator had not closed the probate estate. Our petition seeks enforcement of the Court’s Order and the relief requested in the filing,” the statement added. “Because this matter is now before the Court, we will respect the legal process while remaining focused on the facts set forth in the petition.”

The statement continued, “On behalf of our parents, we are committed to ensuring that transparency, accountability, and respect guide the resolution of these matters. Our hope is that this process brings clarity, honors the Court’s orders, and ensures the responsible stewardship of Chadwick’s legacy. We love our brother, and we remain committed to preserving his legacy with dignity, integrity, and respect.”

“While these matters proceed through the appropriate legal process, we remain focused on protecting our parents’ interests, honoring Chadwick responsibly, and continuing the purposeful work we are building through Boseman Family LLC,” the statement concluded.

The Boseman family wants to appoint a private accountant as the administrator of the estate.
