Victoria Monét & SZA's 'See You In My Dreams' Lyrics & Meaning

Victoria Monét and SZA are teaming up for one of the standout collaborations on Frequency of Love!
The 37-year-old Grammy winner recruited the 36-year-old SOS superstar for “See You In My Dreams,” which appears as Track 13 on Victoria‘s brand new album, released Friday (October 2).
The song finds both singers looking back at a relationship they may have let slip away.
So, what does “See You In My Dreams” mean?
What Do Victoria Monét & SZA’s “See You In My Dreams” Lyrics Mean?
“See You In My Dreams” is about regretting that you underestimated a romantic connection and continuing to think about that person after the opportunity has passed.
The song hinges on a clever double meaning in the phrase “slept on you.” In everyday slang, “sleeping on” someone means failing to recognize their value or potential. Victoria turns that expression literal by saying she “slept on” the person so badly that she still sees them while she is asleep.
“I slept on you so hard that I still see you in my dreams,” she sings in the chorus.
In the opening verse, Victoria admits that regret keeps pulling her thoughts back toward the person, even as she tries to convince herself to accept the loss and move on.
SZA takes a more guarded perspective in the second verse. She describes fearing that she could be played and keeping her defenses up despite recognizing that the relationship may look perfect on paper.
Together, the two singers capture the push and pull between wanting someone and realizing that pride, fear or hesitation may have gotten in the way.
The outro reinforces the idea, with the former love becoming a “recurring character” who keeps returning in their dreams.
“See You In My Dreams” Interpolates Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner”
There’s another musical detail listeners may recognize in the song.
“See You In My Dreams” interpolates Suzanne Vega‘s 1987 classic “Tom’s Diner” in its pre-chorus. Suzanne is also officially credited as one of the song’s writers.
The familiar melodic reference gives the dreamy R&B track an additional throwback element while leading into its central hook.
The song was produced by Camper, Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman, Branden Rowell and Robert Debose.
“See You In My Dreams” appears on Frequency of Love, Victoria‘s 22-track sophomore studio album, alongside collaborations with Bruno Mars, Bryson Tiller, Lucky Daye, Chlöe, Leon Thomas and Hazel Monét.
Apple Music describes the SZA collaboration as a “gauzy” moment on the album, while early reviews have also singled it out as one of the project’s stronger tracks.
