Wonka’s The Golden Ticket contestant Garrison Wilson has revealed the devastating news that his grandmother passed away on the final day of filming the reality show.

Garrison, 30, chose his mother Shawn, 64, as his partner on the reality competition series and they emotionally revealed to other players that they were hoping to win the $3 million prize to cover the costs of caring for his sick grandmother.

“It’s a chance to win a life-changing amount of money to take care of my girls: my fiancée, grandma, mom, and sisters,” Garrison told Netflix before competing. “I was raised by women who sacrificed so much to give me the opportunities that I’ve had.”

Garrison and Shawn sadly didn’t win

Shawn was eliminated by fellow contestant Kayla Simone despite her pleas to stay in the game to have a chance at winning and put the money towards her mother’s medical bills. Garrison made it to the final three, but lost in the final challenge.

Towards the end of the game, the remaining contestants were shown messages from family members. Garrison‘s video message from his grandma ended up being the last time he’d hear her voice.

Garrison Wilson’s tribute for his grandmother

“MY ANGEL GRAM. On the final day of filming the Golden Ticket, my Gram passed away. I had no idea this would be the last ‘I love you’ I’d ever hear from her. It’s incredibly special knowing that moment is now memorialized forever within this show. I’ll always be able to hear my Gram tell me she loves me one more time. I hope I made you proud, Gram. This one was always for you,” Garrison wrote on TikTok.

Shawn commented on the post, “My sweet Mother. Amazing Tribute Gar.”
