The impressive result also marks a significant jump from last year’s show.

How Many People Watched the 2026 MTV VMAs?

The 2026 VMAs drew 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, according to the Nielsen figures.

That’s up 51% from the 2025 ceremony, which drew approximately 5.6 million viewers across CBS and MTV, including an MTV encore, according to TheWrap.

Viewership peaked at more than 15 million viewers during the opening performance, which featured Madonna, Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX.

Madonna opened the show with her first VMAs performance in 23 years, performing alongside Sabrina and Charli.

The show averaged 7.61 million viewers on CBS, up 52% from last year’s 5 million. MTV averaged 686,000 viewers, up 40% from last year’s show.

The show was also the most-watched VMAs among adults 18-49 since 2018, drawing 2.66 million viewers in the demographic. It was the biggest VMAs among adults 25-54 since 2019 with 3.11 million viewers, and the biggest among adults 18-34 since 2020 with 1.14 million viewers.

Paramount previously reported that the 2025 ceremony had delivered the VMAs’ biggest television audience since 2019, with more than 5.5 million viewers across CBS, MTV and Paramount+.

The 2026 telecast has now surpassed that result and delivered the show’s strongest same-day audience since 2015.

How Do the Ratings Compare to the 2015 VMAs?

The 2015 MTV VMAs drew 12.73 million viewers, according to TheWrap.
