Dolly Parton was married to her husband Carl Dean for more than 60 years, but he remained completely out of the spotlight for their entire relationship. Now, they have both passed away within a year of each other.
The legendary entertainer passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday (August 25) and the world is in mourning over the loss of one of the music industry’s most powerful voices.
Dolly‘s passing comes one year after the tragic death of Carl, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82.

How Dolly Parton and Carl Dean met
If you didn’t know, Dolly and Carl met outside of the Wishy Washy Laundromat the day she moved to Nashville at 18. They married two years later on May 30, 1966 in a small ceremony.
Dolly and Carl kept their relationship very private and she’s only shared a handful of photos of her husband over the years.

Why Carl Dean never made a public appearance with Dolly Parton
“Carl has never been in the limelight and all, never wanted to be in it. He don’t like it. He went to one thing with me early on when we first married to a BMI Song of the Year [event], and he came out there taking off his tuxedo, his tie and all that and said, ‘Don’t ever ask me to go to another one of these damn things because I ain’t going.’ I never asked him and he never did,” she said on What Would Dolly Do? Radio on Apple Music 1.

What was Carl Dean’s cause of death?
Not much is known about how Carl died, but Dolly said after his death that he “suffered a great deal.”
“I’m at peace that he’s at peace, but that don’t keep me from missing him and loving him,” Dolly told Knox News.
She went on to say, “I’m doing better than I thought I would. “I’ve been with him 60 years. So, I’m going to have to relearn some of the things that we’ve done. But I’ll keep him always close.”
“It’s a hole in my heart,” Dolly added, “but we’ll fill that up with good stuff and he’ll still always be with me.”

Carl Dean left his entire estate to Dolly Parton
Carl Dean‘s will was revealed in October 2025 in court documents released to the public.
The will, originally signed in 2013, covers his personal property, including items tied to Dolly’s legendary music career such as costumes, photos, cars, and other paraphernalia.
Carl also indicated there may be a handwritten note outlining where certain personal items should go. If that note isn’t located, Dolly will take responsibility for distributing those possessions herself. She has also requested to be appointed executor of his estate.
Dolly shared a health update about herself just four days before she died.
