Stella Lefty’s ‘Misery’ Goes Viral as Fans Compare It to ‘A Million Dreams’ From ‘The Greatest Showman’

Stella Lefty is facing another round of scrutiny over similarities between one of her songs and an earlier hit.

The 24-year-old “Boston” singer-songwriter’s song “Misery” is going viral as listeners compare it to “A Million Dreams,” the hit song written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for The Greatest Showman.

Comments comparing the songs began appearing on the “Misery” YouTube upload about a month ago, according to Stereogum, before the comparison gained wider attention on social media over the weekend.

“Misery,” which appeared on Stella‘s 2025 EP Tragic, Really, was written by Stella, Madi Yanofsky and Phil Cook, according to the song’s credits. Benj and Justin are not currently credited on the track.

Fans Compare Stella Lefty’s “Misery” to “A Million Dreams”

There has been no reported legal claim over the similarities, and neither Stella nor the writers of “A Million Dreams” appear to have publicly addressed the comparisons.

However, this isn’t the first time one of Stella‘s songs has drawn comparisons to another hit.

The Stella Lefty Songs That Have Drawn Comparisons to Other Hits

“Misery” is now at least the fourth Stella Lefty song to draw widespread online comparisons to previously released music.

Her breakout hit “Boston” famously drew comparisons to Noah Kahan‘s “Stick Season.” Noah ultimately received a songwriting credit on the track.

Stella previously addressed the similarities, explaining that she was not thinking about Noah when she wrote the song.

“I don’t want to step on anybody’s toes, so I’m like, if this sounds like that, whatever, all good,” she told Vanity Fair.

Another song, “Summer You Were Mine,” contains an interpolation of The Chicks‘ 1998 song “There’s Your Trouble.”

Songwriters Tia Sillers and Mark Selby were initially missing from the song’s credits on streaming services. However, Stella‘s label Atlantic Records previously explained that the interpolation had been approved and blamed their absence from the credits on a “streaming platform error.” The credits were subsequently updated.

More recently, listeners began comparing “Why Wouldn’t We,” a song from Stella‘s debut album Long Way Home, to Blake Shelton‘s 2017 song “I’ll Name the Dogs.”

The writers of Blake‘s song are not currently credited on “Why Wouldn’t We,” and there has been no indication that Blake or the songwriters have taken legal action over the comparisons.

Now, “Misery” has become the latest song to attract attention, with listeners sharing clips comparing portions of the track to “A Million Dreams.”

While the online comparisons have sparked another debate about Stella‘s music, similarities between songs do not by themselves establish that one artist copied another, and no legal claim regarding “Misery” has been publicly reported.

The latest conversation comes just days after Kelsea Ballerini defended Stella amid criticism surrounding her Grand Ole Opry debut.
