Skeet Ulrich Explains Why a ‘Scream’ Return Is Unlikely Without Melissa Barrera

Skeet Ulrich is explaining why another appearance as Billy Loomis would be difficult without Melissa Barrera.
The Scream actor addressed his future with the franchise in a new interview with Us Weekly, pointing to the connection between Billy and Melissa‘s character, Sam Carpenter.
“He was in her head. They had their chance at it and didn’t quite get to complete the three-film arc that they talked to me about,” Skeet said of Billy’s appearance in the recent sequels.
The Riverdale alum originally played Billy in the 1996 movie, then returned in 2022’s Scream and Scream VI. Those films introduced Sam as Billy’s daughter and brought him back through visions she experienced.
That setup gave Billy a place in Sam’s story. Without her, Skeet explained, the reason for his character to appear is missing.
He also said the filmmakers had discussed a three-movie storyline with him that never reached its conclusion. Melissa was fired from the franchise in 2023 and neither actor appeared in Scream 7.
Matthew Lillard recently said he felt ashamed about returning for Scream 7.
The unfinished plan has been discussed before, Deadline reported in December 2025 that Skeet had been expected to return before Melissa‘s firing changed the movie’s direction.
