Sandra Oh Makes Rare Comments About ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Exit After 10 Seasons

Sandra Oh is speaking out about her departure from Grey’s Anatomy.

The 55-year-old actress played Dr Christina Yang throughout the first ten seasons of the long-running ABC medical drama.

In a new appearance on the Dinner’s On Me podcast with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, another ABC alum, Sandra opened up about salary negotiations and deciding to leave the show after so many years.

“When it came to [the] end of season eight, or nine, [creator Shonda Rhimes] took me aside because we were all renegotiating and she goes, ‘What do you want to do?’” she recalled. “I said, ‘Let me think about it.’ And I really, really thought about it.”

“The creative being will dictate, and you got to follow it. You got to ask it, ‘What do you want to do? What should I do?” she continued. “I felt very much like I did my job. I really did my job. I feel like I created a full character. I feel I grew the character [in] 10 years time, where it’s a believable growth. People grow in 10 years, and I think she really did grow.”

“The privilege was to actually plan an exit and all the writers to be able to plan the exit to support that,” Sandra shared. “And I know that it is extremely rare to have. So, that was a real, real gift.”

Last year, Sandra recalled fighting for script changes on the show, and she also talked about always turning down a return to the series.
