Troye Sivan has dropped his new song “Party,” which features a sample of Madonna‘s “Music” and narration from Ian McKellen in the epic music video.

The 31-year-old Australian singer has opened up about the inspiration for the new dance song.

“Dance music sounds very different on a dance floor than it does coming out of your laptop speaker. The repetition becomes almost hypnotic, and I wanted to play with structure in that way,” he said in a statement.

Troye‘s label added that the song is “inspired by the cyclical rhythm of a weekend spent moving from place to place” and he wanted it “to capture the feeling of a night that keeps going – from one location to the next, with no real beginning or end. The song draws from the bush doofs he experienced growing up in Melbourne, as well as the euphoria of hearing dance music exactly where it belongs: on the dance floor.”

Ian McKellen narrates the beginning of the video

Troye worked with Ian when he was 14-years-old in a production of Waiting for Godot in Australia.

“For Sivan, McKellen’s appearance carries a deeply personal significance. At the time they worked together, Sivan was on the cusp of coming out to his mother, and seeing an openly gay man who was free, proud and successful left a lasting impression,” Troye‘s label wrote in a press release.

The video was directed by Gordon von Steiner and was shot at a castle in Berkeley, England.

“When Gordon von Steiner and I were talking about the video and the song, we kept coming back to the idea that partying is actually quite sacred, especially for queer people. Nightlife is often the first place a queer person finds themselves in a room where they’re not the minority, so it becomes a really formative and liberating space for so many of us. And it letting loose is innate to humanity, which I believe it is, then surely people have always partied. We wanted to know what that looked like.. So we went back in time and threw one,” Troye said in a statement.

Troye‘s love interest in the video is played by model Peter Seggio.

What are the lyrics for “Party”?

Troye sample’s Madonna‘s “Music” on the refrain for the song, singing, “Music makes the people come together, yeah.”

In the chorus, Troye sings, “Party in the park, party in the bush / Party under the bridge, party at the restaurant / Party at the club, party in the day, party in my house / Party on the way to the party at the park.”

The song will be featured on Troye‘s fourth album, She’s the Best.
