I Want Your Sex is heading to theaters this weekend (Friday, July 31), and the first reviews are in.

The Gregg Araki-directed movie stars Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman, Charli xcx, Daveed Diggs, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, Margaret Cho and Johnny Knoxville.

Here’s a synopsis:

When fresh-faced Elliot (Hoffman) lands an exciting job for renowned artist, icon and provocateur Erika Tracy (Wilde), his fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse. But Elliot soon finds himself out of his depth as Erika takes him on a journey more profound than he ever could have imagined, into a world of sex, obsession, power, betrayal and murder.

Reviews have been pouring in ahead of the theatrical release from critics. What are people saying so far?

I Want Your Sex currently has an 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The New Yorker writes: “The verbal and visual building blocks of Araki’s comedy — quick-witted one-liners, exuberant sex scenes, sartorial gags, garish décor — express a dazzling, totalizing sense of optimism. Hoffman’s lummoxy charisma fits right into this scheme.”

AV Club gave it a B+, writing: “Araki’s silly, sexy, tongue-in-cheek skewering of cross-generational sexual attitudes is just as funny as it is thought-provoking.”

Wall Street Journal said: “Ms. Wilde is outrageously funny in the movie, whose sexually explicit nature was an eyebrow-raiser even for this famously unruly celebration of edgy work.”

RogerEbert.com says: “At a certain point, it feels like I Want Your Sex is about to get a bit sharper teeth, but it’s consistently funny, along with being a further reminder that Cooper Hoffman can do just about anything.”

The Daily Beast adds: “Consistently funny and erotic, if ultimately a bit too straightlaced for the incendiary subject matter at hand.”

Vulture says: “The director and his cast are clearly having so much fun, and that fun carries through to the audience. Who ultimately cares if they don’t quite stick the landing?”

IndieWire gave it a B-, writing: “A Gregg Araki movie will never be boring, and this one is a good time even when it’s tripping over itself to complicate its story and disguise the fact that it’s trying to serve as a teachable moment.”

TheWrap says: “Even as the structure of the story creates a sense of inevitability to everything that can undercut the fun of seeing it fall apart, the often campy and heightened way each scene plays out means you’re always drawn in by something.”

Guardian gave it 2 out of 5, writing: “It’s a 90-minute romp that feels longer than that, increasingly unexciting hijinks that are never as amusing or as propulsive as they should be. I Want Your Sex wants our shock, our arousal and our debate but it barely gets our attention.”

Variety says: “Once you get past the shock, the plot falls apart. But that hardly matters, since Araki’s achieved his main goal: getting a repressed generation to loosen up about sex by pushing the boundaries between profound and profane.”

THR says: “Even if it threatens to run out of steam in the late action, the movie is a blast, demonstrating that at 66, Araki has lost none of his youthful spark.”
