Madonna is reflecting on her late brother, Christopher Ciccone.

The 67-year-old Queen of Pop is releasing her new album Confessions II on Friday (July 3), and there’s an emotional song at the end of the standard edition called “Fragile,” a dedication to her brother, who passed away at the age of 63 in 2024.

Christopher was a pivotal part of Madonna‘s early career, and famously worked as one of her backup dancers, appearing in club performances and music videos like “Lucky Star” before becoming a show designer and backstage dresser. He also was the art director of her iconic Blonde Ambition World Tour. He was then appointed tour director for her follow-up, The Girlie Show.

The two later had a public falling out amid her then-marriage to Guy Ritchie, and he published his autobiography Life with My Sister Madonna. They didn’t talk for “years,” until he got sick and reached out.

“It was such a load off my back, such a weight that was removed, baggage that I could put down, to finally be able to be in a room with him and holding his hand, even if he was dying, and saying, ‘I love you and I forgive you,’” she said to Jay Shetty on his podcast.

“He was in a lot of pain, on the phone, and he was not in a good place. I knew it was close to the end. And then I went upstairs and wrote a song,” Madonna told Graham Norton about writing the song.

“It’s cathartic, it’s like a therapy to let go of someone you love. The best way to do it is to write about it. It’s like an exorcism.”
