President Donald Trump‘s expected appearance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals next week is set to bring major security changes to Madison Square Garden.
According to CBS News and an official statement shared on the New York Knicks X account, security will be significantly heightened when Trump attends the game between the Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on Monday (June 8). The Knicks currently lead the series 2-0.
“A we move closer to Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday night, Madison Square Garden and the United States Secret Service want to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all ticket holders by sharing important security procedures that will be in place,” reads the beginning of the statement shared by the sports team.
Fans heading to Madison Square Garden should expect airport-style screening procedures before entering the arena. Law enforcement officials told CBS News that no bags of any kind will be permitted inside, including purses, backpacks, and totes.
Only ticketed fans will be allowed into the arena, and checkpoints are expected to open at 6:30 p.m., two hours before tipoff. Officials are encouraging attendees to arrive early due to the enhanced screening process.
A complete list of prohibited items has also been shared online on the Secret Service website.
The area surrounding Madison Square Garden is also expected to face major restrictions. Reports indicate there will be no watch parties near the venue, while vehicle and pedestrian access around portions of the arena will be limited.
Trump is expected to attend the game after receiving an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan. If he attends as scheduled, he will become the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA game since former President Barack Obama attended a season opener in 2015.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has also said he plans to attend the game, though he noted he will be seated in a different area of the arena.
