Dave Bautista Officially Joins ‘God of War’ TV Series, Replacing Ryan Hurst After His Injury

Dave Bautista has officially joined the upcoming TV series adaptation of the video game God of War.

The 57-year-old actor will be playing the role of Kratos in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, replacing Ryan Hurst after he had to drop out of the show.

The show was first announced at the end of 2022 in a two-season order, but the original creative team left in October of 2024 amid creative differences with producers. Ronald D. Moore is the new showrunner. The series will follow the storyline of the two most recent God of War games, which introduced Kratos’ 10-year-old son, Atreus.

Why Ryan Hurst dropped out of the show

Ryan was cast in God of War back in January 2026 and his casting was fitting as he was a voice in the video game God of War: Ragnarok.

On July 16, 2026 it was revealed that Ryan tore his bicep while filming a stunt for the series. His injury required surgery, putting the production on pause.

It was previously revealed that a new actor would be cast with a mid-October start eyed for production to start up once again. Additionally, most of the existing footage will be unusable because child actor Callum Vinson, who plays Kratos’ son Atreus, is already growing up, so they will have to do reshoots.

Dave Bautista joins the series

Variety notes that Dave was right for the role as he’s already in the physical shape needed to play Kratos, who is known for his muscular physique.

Coming from a wrestling background, Dave is primed to take over a physically demanding role like Kratos with limited preparation time. He also had to bulk up recently already for his Highlander movie.

In the series, “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
