Christopher Nolan bans Uggs boots from his movie sets.

Anne Hathaway revealed his distaste for the comfortable shoes during a visit to Brittany Broski‘s Royal Court recently while promoting The Odyssey alongside co-star Matt Damon.

Gayle King followed up with some questions about the ban during Nolan‘s visit to CBS Mornings on Tuesday (July 21).

“Anne Hathaway said something interesting. She said ‘Chris says no Uggs on the set.’ What does that mean?’” she asked the filmmaker.

According to Nolan, actors will sometimes “turn up in these big fluffy comfy slippers” and he finds it something that can “take you out of reality” as “a signifier of modernity.”

“The funny thing is, you can be on a set, where you’ve got a guy holding a microphone, you’ve got a giant camera, you’ve got crew everywhere. But something like that can actually weirdly take you out of reality. And for me, I think that’s always been something, where, it’s like if someone’s eating a bag of chips off-camera or something,” he said.

Nolan continued, “There are just certain things that remind you you’re in the real world as opposed to the world we’re trying to create for the actors. I want to stay in the moment, we want the actors to stay in the moment. And so for me, Ugg boots are a signifier of modernity.”

The director admitted the idea is “absurd,” and actually enjoys Uggs outside of his movie sets.

Emily Blunt bought Christopher Nolan Uggs as a wrap gift on Oppenheimer

Emily Blunt previously wore Uggs on the set of Oppenheimer and even gifted Nolan his own pair as a wrap gift.

He would ask her to get “rid of the boots” and put on her period-appropriate 1940s shoes to get ready and Emily eventually “got so sick” of him mentioning the boots over and over again that she bought him his own pair.

“I’ve never known anyone to detest a pair of Uggs more than Chris Nolan,” Emily previously told USA Today back in July 2023.

She continued, “I would sometimes put on some Uggs and I’d just get this withering look down to my feet — it was like being in The Devil Wears Prada again. Just the look down to the shoes. And I’d go, ‘I know, I know. But I’m just sitting on an apple box in the background today!’”

Nolan later admitted the Uggs were “pretty comfortable.”
