Chris Evans Talks Marvel Return & Why ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Was the Right Time After ‘A Dozen Pitches’

Chris Evans is speaking out about his big return to the MCU in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
The 45-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the next Avengers installment, marking his first time as the character since Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
He briefly returned to the MCU in 2024, reprising his Fantastic Four role of Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine.
While attending the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (July 25), Chris opened up about returning to the role and why this was the right project after receiving “at least a dozen pitches” over the years.
Marvel bosses have pitched different ideas to Chris Evans over 8 years
“When we finished Endgame in 2018, Lou [D’Esposito] and Kevin [Feige] took me to dinner and they were like, ‘We’d love to keep doing movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad,’” Chris told Entertianment Weekly, referring to one of Steve’s alternate identities after hanging up the Captain America mantle. “And I said, ‘Okay, well, what do you got?’”
“They showed me a pitch, and it was a great pitch, but for whatever reason, it just didn’t feel right at the time,” he added. “I kind of wanted to… I was a little precious. I wanted to preserve it. But I just said, ‘Please keep pitching.’”
“Over the course of eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches,” Chris continued. “And they were all wonderful. It just never quite felt right. And you do start thinking maybe that’s the expiration — whatever it is — maybe it’s not right because it’s just not right.”
Chris Evans reveals why Avengers: Doomsday was the right time to return
“I got a phone call from my team saying there’s a rumor [Robert Downey Jr. is] talking to Marvel, and I was like, ‘Uh, oh. What does this mean?’” he recalled to EW. “And all of a sudden it felt right. [Doomsday co-director Joe Russo] gave me the pitch, and Downey was baying. It just all of a sudden… it was like, ‘This is it.’”
What’s next for Chris Evans in the MCU
“I guess it’s a never-say-never, but certainly not willing to just jump back in for anything because I think everyone here is precious with their role in the universe,” the actor said. “This stuff, it’s earned its position over a long period of time. You don’t want to mess with that.”
