All of TIFF’s Biggest Movie Premieres on September 16: Linda Cardellini, Rami Malek, Carrie Coon, & More!

Even more stars were at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on Wednesday (September 16) to promote their new projects!

Linda Cardellini, Rami Malek, Tom Sturridge, and Carrie Coon are just some of the stars who were on the red carpet in Toronto for the premieres of their upcoming movies and shows.

TIFF is often the launchpad for awards season movies, so we’re going to have a better idea of Oscars frontrunners once this festival wraps up.

Crystal Lake

Linda Cardellini attended the premiere of her Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake alongside co-stars Cameron Scoggins and Devin Kessler, showrunner Brad Kane, co-star William Catlett, and executive producer Michael Lennox.

Here’s the synopsis:

A prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise, the series follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?

The Man I Love

Rami Malek and Tom Sturridge walked the red carpet on Wednesday at the premiere of their gay romance drama movie The Man I Love.

Here’s the synopsis:

The movie is described as a “musical fantasia of a city under duress” and it takes place during the AIDS crisis in the late 1980s.

Set in the vibrant era of late 80s New York, the film follows Jimmy George, a Downtown performance artist in an extraordinary moment between great illness and death when, still, all beauty and love is possible.

The movie’s director recently spoke about casting straight actors as gay characters.

A Common Story

Alba Rohrwacher attended the premiere of her Italian romantic drama movie A Common Story (Una Storia) on Wednesday night.

Here’s the synopsis:

Writer-director Anna Foglietta’s heartfelt debut feature follows nascent empty nesters who encounter old desires while seeking new meaning in their lives.

A Long Winter

Caitriona Balfe, along with director/writer Andrew Haigh and co-star Fred Hechinger, premiered their new movie A Long Winter at the film festival on Wednesday night.

Here’s the synopsis:

A Long Winter follows Mike (Hechinger), a young man on the cusp of adulthood whose life is upended when his mother disappears during the first blizzard of the season. As the search stretches from days into weeks, the onset of winter becomes inseparable from the family’s slow reckoning with the possibility that she may never return.

The cast also includes Kit Connor, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

It Will Happen Tonight

Louis Garrel and Jasmine Trinca premiered their new movie It Will Happen Tonight, which is based on a short story collection by Eshkol Nevo.

Here’s the synopsis:

Unfolding across many years, the characters in It Will Happen Tonight encounter passionate interludes of love and loss, unexpected beginnings and endings, that will restore your faith in romantic destiny and the wild logic of the heart.

Matteo (Garrel) first meets Greta (Trinca) in Rome. He’s playing tennis and — en route to her own wedding — she stops for a round with this stranger. Greta wipes the floor with Matteo and, with a beguiling smile, dashes off to be married. Matteo is lovestruck, but what can he do?

Years later, Matteo, in San Sebastián to attend a Bruce Springsteen concert, sees Greta searching for her missing daughter. Their paths cross. Later still, Matteo spots Greta once again in a Rome café. She’s still with her husband, deeply focused on motherhood, and Matteo has a new wife.

The Liberation

Carrie Coon was at the film festival on Wednesday night for the premiere of her new movie The Liberation.

Here’s the synopsis:

The Liberation is inspired by the strange journey of director Guy Nattiv‘s grandmother, a Holocaust survivor who later in life drifted slowly away from her husband and children when she fell under the spell of a woman 10 years younger — his family only years after her passing realized it was what we now know as a cult. Nattiv was only a child trying to process all this at the time, but decades later took his own journey to finally put the pieces together to make his film, a work of fiction inspired by real life and dedicated to survivors of cults everywhere, and the families who are left behind.

The cast also includes Lily James, Bella Ramsey, Odessa Young, and Tracy Letts.
