'Lanterns' Season 2 Renewal Status: Renewed or Canceled?

Lanterns is heading into its Season 1 finale, and fans are already wondering if the hit HBO series will return for another season.
The DC Studios series stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, two Green Lanterns pulled into a dark mystery after a murder in the American heartland.
Season 1 consists of eight episodes, with the finale set to air on Sunday night (October 4).
So, has Lanterns been renewed for Season 2?

Has Lanterns Been Renewed for Season 2?
As of October 3, HBO has not officially renewed Lanterns for Season 2.
The network also has not announced that the series has been canceled.
However, there are several encouraging signs for fans hoping the story will continue.
Showrunner Chris Mundy has already been developing ideas for a potential second season, and recent reporting indicates that a writers’ room has been assembled to work on possible Season 2 stories.
“We’re about six weeks into laying out a season, and then we’ll talk to folks about it really soon,” he told THR.
A separate report published October 1 also identified Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds and Vanessa Baden Kelly as writers working with the showrunner on the potential second season.
Importantly, that development work does not mean HBO has officially ordered another season.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn also recently referred to the upcoming eighth episode as the show’s season finale, rather than a series finale. When a fan asked for him to clarify that he meant season, not series, he confirmed on Threads: “Season finale, correct.”
For now, fans will have to wait for HBO or DC Studios to make an official announcement.

Lanterns Has Been a Big Ratings Performer for HBO
The series has delivered strong viewership during its first season.
The premiere drew 9.3 million global viewers across HBO and HBO Max during its first three days, including 6.6 million viewers in the United States, according to figures from Warner Bros. Discovery. The debut ranked among HBO Max’s five biggest series premieres. Episode 3 then grew to 10 million global viewers and 7 million U.S. viewers during its first three days, marking a series high at that point, per TheWrap.
The strong performance adds another reason fans are optimistic about a possible second season, though HBO has not tied those numbers to a renewal decision.

When Is the Lanterns Season 1 Finale?
The Lanterns Season 1 finale airs Sunday, October 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will also stream on HBO Max.
The episode will bring the show’s eight-episode first season to a close.

Will Aaron Pierre Return as John Stewart?
Even without a confirmed second season, Aaron Pierre‘s future in the DC Universe is already continuing.
The actor is set to reprise his role as John Stewart in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie, which is part of the larger DCU.
That means John Stewart’s story will continue beyond the first season of Lanterns, even as fans wait to learn whether HBO will bring the series itself back.
