Judge Judy is facing backlash over recent comments she made about people who are unhappy with the United States.
The 83-year-old television personality, whose real name is Judith Sheindlin, sparked debate after saying people who don’t like the country should “go somewhere else” rather than try to change it.
The remarks have now drawn responses from several stars, including comedian Ms. Pat and multiple co-hosts of The View.
While some have strongly criticized Judge Judy‘s comments, others have offered a different interpretation of what she was trying to say.

What Did Judge Judy Say?
Judge Judy made the comments while discussing America and capitalism in a recent interview with USA Today.
“I have a house, and I have a home. I consider America my home. America has been good to me. I think that it’s the greatest country in the world,” she said.
“If you don’t like this country, go somewhere else,” she continued. “Don’t come to the greatest country in the world, the most successful country in the world, and say, ‘I want to change it.'”
She went on to defend capitalism and entrepreneurship, pointing to American achievements in technology and medicine.
“We are a capitalist country that revered excellence, that revered entrepreneurship, that revered all the things that made us great,” she said.
The comments quickly generated discussion online and among other public figures.
Ms. Pat Slams Judge Judy’s Comments
Ms. Pat initially responded to the remarks while speaking to TMZ earlier this week, arguing that Judge Judy‘s wealth and experiences have shaped her perspective.
The comedian has now doubled down while appearing on SiriusXM’s The Dean Obeidallah Show.
“You never been in that situation,” she said. “Yell that the country has been good to you, old white woman. But I’m a Black woman in this country and it ain’t been as good to me as it has to you.”
Ms. Pat argued that economic issues can affect people very differently depending on their circumstances.
“Sometimes we all need a reality check,” she later said. “And just because your pocket can handle it don’t mean the next person pocket can handle it.”
She also suggested that Judge Judy‘s financial position may leave her disconnected from people struggling with everyday expenses.
“Well, it doesn’t affect her so she don’t care. It’s not at her door,” she said. “She don’t know anybody poor. She probably live in a brownstone or whatever y’all live in New York, the rich people. You probably never been to a grocery store.”
Ana Navarro Strongly Disagrees With Judge Judy
Ana Navarro was among the The View co-hosts who strongly objected to Judge Judy‘s comments when the panel discussed them on Friday (September 25).
“I take umbrage at what she said, and I don’t like it at all,” Ana said.
She argued that criticizing the government should not be confused with disliking America.
“If you want things to change in the government, you stay, you fight, you vote, you organize, and you are part of the change,” she said.
Ana also argued that simply moving to another country isn’t a realistic option for many people, saying Judge Judy sounded like she was speaking “from a place of privilege.”
Sunny Hostin Says She Heard ‘A Lot of Selfishness’
Sunny Hostin similarly disagreed with Judge Judy‘s remarks.
The View co-host said she heard “a lot about me” in the comments and questioned what individual success means when other Americans continue to struggle.
“What is success if everyone else isn’t successful?” Sunny asked during the discussion.
She also argued that America has undergone constant change throughout its history and that immigration has contributed to the country’s success.
Sara Haines & Joy Behar Had a Different Interpretation
Not everyone on The View interpreted Judge Judy‘s remarks the same way.
Sara Haines suggested that she heard the comments differently from Ana and Sunny, interpreting them more broadly as an argument about the country’s underlying values rather than a statement that people who disagree with the current government should leave.
Joy Behar similarly said, “I don’t think Judy is saying that if you disagree with Trump you should leave the country.”
Sunny responded that she did interpret the comments that way.
Alyssa Farah Griffin Weighs In
Alyssa Farah Griffin also offered a more nuanced response to Judge Judy‘s comments.
She noted that Americans have the First Amendment right to criticize their country and government, while also discussing Judge Judy‘s concerns about capitalism and socialism.
The View panel ultimately remained divided over exactly how Judge Judy‘s remarks should be interpreted.
Judge Judy has not publicly responded to the criticism from Ms. Pat or The View co-hosts as of this writing.
