The roller coaster X2 at Six Flags Magic Mountain, located right outside of Los Angeles, is now permanently closed.
Six Flags closed the ride temporarily in July 2026 after reports of brain injuries among riders. These were just the latest of multiple injuries reported over the years, in addition to the death of 22-year-old Christopher Hawley, who lost consciousness and passed away shortly after riding the coaster in 2022.
X2 featured seats that hung off the sides of the track and were able to spin both forward and backward, for a full 360 degree effect while the ride was in motion.

After almost 20 years, we have decided to permanently retire X2.
Since X2 opened in 2008, it has welcomed more than 16 million guests and earned a passionate following among ride enthusiasts. We recognize the special place X2 holds in the coaster community, and we are grateful to our team members who operated and maintained it throughout its run.
While X2 consistently passed a multitude of safety tests, we have decided to close the ride because we believe it’s the right thing to do. Ride safety is a cornerstone of our business, and when we see guest confidence affected, we take it seriously.

Local news outlet WBTV reports that the ride has been linked to two deaths and more than 100 brain injuries.
