Sombr honored George Michael in more ways than won at the 2026 MTV VMAs.
On Sunday night (September 27), the 21-year-old “Back to Friends” singer, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose, was one of the musicians that paid tribute to the late English singer at the awards show.
Sombr opened the tribute by singing George‘s songs “Faith” and “Father Figure.” During his performance, Sombr wore George‘s actual cropped leather jacket, which featured various embellishments and a silver chainmail panel on the back.
George wore the leather jacket during his 1988 Faith Tour and in his iconic 1989 Diet Coke commercial.
Teddy Swims, RAYE, Adam Lambert, MEEK, MNEK, and Saint Harison also took part in the VMAs‘ tribute to George.
The George Michael tribute performance comes ahead of the release of the George Michael: The Faith Tour live album on November 6th, as well as the feature-length film George Michael: The Faith Tour, set to hit theaters in the US on December 11th.
George was a four-time VMAs winner during his career, and he also received the Video Vanguard Award in 1989. He died on Christmas Day 2016 at the age of 53.
