The next Saw movie has found its director!

Mike P. Nelson has been tapped to direct the next installment in the long-running horror franchise, with original filmmaker James Wan returning as a producer.

Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster announced the news on Thursday (September 24), revealing several more details about the upcoming movie.

Who Is Directing the Next Saw Movie?

Mike will direct the movie from a script written by Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock, who have previously worked on projects including Dune: Prophecy.

The director’s latest movie, Beware Boiúna, is set to hit theaters on October 2 after recently having its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.

Mike is also known for directing the 2021 Wrong Turn reboot, Silent Night, Deadly Night and a segment of V/H/S/85.

“Being asked to play in this twisted sandbox with James is nothing short of a dream come true,” Mike said in a statement. “Greg and Geoff and James have crafted such a wild script that brings the mystery of the original while exploring new insane bloody ideas that meld so well with the brutal moral compass of the franchise. Let the games begin!”

James Wan Is Returning to the Saw Franchise

The new movie will mark a major return to the franchise for James, who directed the original Saw movie and is producing the new installment alongside Jason Blum and Leigh Whannell.

“Making the original Saw was a defining experience for me, so it was essential to find a director who would honor that world,” James said. “Mike has a raw, distinctive filmmaking voice with an inventive approach to the genre, and I believe he’ll bring something truly unique and special to the franchise.”

The new movie comes after the previously planned Saw XI was scrapped.

Last year, producer Oren Koules revealed why Saw XI was canceled and shared details about the movie’s original plot.

Following the cancellation, Blumhouse acquired the rights to the franchise from Twisted Pictures, with Jason later teasing plans to bring James back into the fold.

“My creative outlook is what I always preach: Get the people who made the magic in the first place more involved. James Wan [the original director] will be hugely involved. That’s how we’re going to reinvent it,” Jason said at the time.

Plot details and casting have not yet been revealed, and Lionsgate has not announced a release date.
