Hannah Einbinder & Susan Sarandon Detained by Police During Protest Near United Nations in NYC

Hannah Einbinder and Susan Sarandon were detained by police while participating in a protest in New York City.

The actresses were among roughly 100 people taken into custody on Thursday (September 24) during a demonstration near the United Nations ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s address to the U.N. General Assembly, according to Variety.

It’s not yet known if they were also arrested or just detained.

The protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and called for an end to U.S. military support for Israel amid the war in Gaza.

Hundreds of protesters gathered near the United Nations on Thursday, with demonstrators blocking traffic on First Avenue as Netanyahu prepared to address world leaders.

Hannah, 31, and Susan, 79, were both seen being taken away by NYPD officers. Reuters also photographed Susan being detained during the demonstration.

Cynthia Nixon was also said to be at the protest alongside other celebrities and political figures, while comedian Caleb Hearon was reportedly detained as well, per Newsweek.

Democracy Now! reports that Elliot Page was also in attendance.

The NYPD had not immediately confirmed a final number of arrests or what charges, if any, those detained would face. Organizers estimated that roughly 100 people were taken into custody.

Ahead of the demonstration, Hannah explained why she was participating.

“We will not be silent as our government fully funds a genocide in Palestine,” she told The Guardian. She added that she felt compelled to participate “as a Jew, as an American, and as a human being.”

Many of the protesters wore shirts reading “Fund people not bombs” and called for the U.S. to stop providing weapons to Israel. Reuters footage from the demonstration shows Susan among protesters chanting outside the United Nations.

Hannah has repeatedly spoken publicly in support of Palestinians, including during her acceptance speech at the Emmys.

Susan has also been outspoken about the war in Gaza. Earlier this month, she revealed that she believes her political views and advocacy have continued to cost her acting roles in Hollywood.
