Her ‘Families Stone’ Role Revealed

Jean Smart is joining the Stone family!

The 75-year-old Emmy-winning actress has joined the cast of The Families Stone, the upcoming sequel to the beloved 2005 holiday movie The Family Stone.

Jean joins a stacked lineup of returning stars, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson and Luke Wilson.

Who Is Jean Smart Playing in The Families Stone?

The sequel takes place 20 years after the death of Stone family matriarch Sybil, who was played by the late Diane Keaton.

The family will reunite for Christmas once again, but this time their father Kelly, played by Craig, has a major surprise: he’s fallen in love with another woman and invited her to meet the family.

Jean will play Kelly’s new love interest, according to Variety.

The news comes less than two weeks after Searchlight officially announced The Families Stone and confirmed that much of the original cast will return.

Returning stars also include Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider and Brian White.

Thomas Bezucha, who wrote and directed the original movie, is returning to write and direct the sequel.

Production is expected to take place in New York this fall. A release date has not yet been announced.

The Families Stone will also mark Jean‘s first movie role since 2022’s Babylon.
