Andrew Garfield and Jamie Bell are finally talking about the role that could have connected them more than a decade before they became costars!

The actors recently appeared together on Watch What Happens Live while promoting their new movie The Uprising. During the interview, they were asked whether they had ever discussed both being considered to play Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

Andrew joked that the subject was “kind of awkward,” but Jamie revealed that they had only spoken about their shared casting history for the first time moments earlier.

The Billy Elliot star then recalled attending a dinner in Los Angeles while the movie’s creative team was still deciding who would become the next Spider-Man, describing it as a “big table” with “a lot of people.”

At one point, he said a salt shaker fell from the table and both actors instinctively reached for it, prompting the other dinner guests to go, “Whoa, Spidey senses!”

Although Jamie was also a serious contender for the superhero role, he had nothing but praise for the eventual decision to cast Andrew.

“They clearly chose the right guy. He’s a phenomenal actor,” Jamie said, while Andrew modestly attempted to wave off the compliment.

Jamie has previously talked about screen testing for Spider-Man

Jamie previously revealed that he got far enough in the audition process to complete a screen test with The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb. He did not test in the character’s famous costume, however, and described the experience as a valuable opportunity.

Andrew ultimately starred opposite Emma Stone in the 2012 film and returned for its 2014 sequel. He later reprised the role alongside fellow Spider-Man actors Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

More than a decade after competing for the same career-changing part, Andrew and Jamie now appear together in The Uprising. The Paul Greengrass-directed historical drama is set against the 1381 rebellion against King Richard II and is now playing in theaters.

Andrew recently talked about his new film’s surprising connection to Robin Hood!
