While at the premiere of JAŸ-Z in 8 on Sunday, Sept. 13 in New York City, the rapper explained that he’s looking forward to showing his three kids his documentary. Still, he admits that his children with wife Beyoncé— daughter Blue Ivy, 14, and twins Sir and Rumi, 9 — might find the creation “cringe.”
“I’m really excited,” JAŸ-Z told E! News. “They know these things. We talk all the time. It’ll be fascinating to see on a big screen and at times, I know it’ll be, like, cringe.”
“You know, when you put yourself out there like that. You get embarrassed, but it’s honest, and it’s a beautiful piece,” he continued. “So I’m very proud of it.”
JAŸ-Z in 8 is an eight-part docuseries on HBO that explores the rapper’s catalog. It arrives in the middle of multiple anniversary shows to celebrate 30 years of the 56-year-old’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint.
The premiere was a black-tie event held at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House, with attendees like Fat Joe, DJ Khaled, Charlamagne tha God, Gunna, and more. According to reports from USA Today, Beyoncé and her mother, Tina Knowles, also attended the screening, though neither walked the red carpet.
As Hov walked the red carpet, he talked to reporters about the docuseries and the evolution of his career. While speaking with Extra, he looked back at some of the lyrics he wrote when he was younger, saying, “A lot of manifesting was in there… It’s quite astonishing you know in a lot of ways. I felt it, you know, I believed it but just to see it all come to fruition is just and just to sit with it and have discussions around it, it’s like one of those moments it’s like, ‘Wow.’”
JAŸ also praised his eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, and her recent journey in the spotlight, sharing, “I’m more nervous for her than I am for myself. Yeah, for sure. But she put in the work and she’s a student and she loves it. So, just to watch her find a way is just extraordinary as well.”
He also gushed over “fearless” wife Beyoncé, adding, “I’m super inspired by her. I think she’s a phenomenal producer and writer. And she’s fearless. She tries all kind of stuff. Some things she does I’m like, I couldn’t do that. She’ll be sitting in the back, like, hollering ad libs and it’s just, you know, I’ll get in the way of myself, you know, I get too self-conscious about it. And she’ll just try anything, anything… she feels in the moment. You don’t have to keep it, but she tries things. She’s very adventurous and her recall is amazing. She’s an amazing producer. I think, you know, because she’s such an extraordinary singer, people underrate the producer that she is. She’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.”
