‘Hawaii Five-O’ Movie in the Works at Paramount, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton Attached

Paramount Pictures is preparing to bring the world of Hawaii Five-O to the big screen!

A new movie based on the classic police procedural is officially in development, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton attached to direct, according to Variety.

Chris Bremner (Bad Boys for Life) is writing the screenplay. Specific details about the movie’s plot, casting and anticipated release date have not yet been announced.

Will the cast of the Hawaii Five-0 reboot return?

The biggest question for longtime fans is whether the movie will have any connection to CBS’ more recent Hawaii Five-0 television series, which starred Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett and Scott Caan as Danny “Danno” Williams.

At this point, there is no indication that Alex, Scott or any other actors from the reboot will return for the film. It also has not been confirmed whether the movie will continue the television show’s storyline, introduce another version of its characters or draw more directly from the original series.

The original Hawaii Five-O debuted on CBS in 1968 and followed an elite state police unit operating in Hawaii. Jack Lord starred as Steve McGarrett, with James MacArthur playing Danny Williams. The successful series ran for 12 seasons before concluding in 1980 and became famous for its picturesque Hawaiian setting and the catchphrase “Book ’em, Danno!”

CBS subsequently revived the property as Hawaii Five-0 in 2010. In addition to Alex and Scott, the reboot’s cast included Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, Chi McBride, Jorge Garcia, Meaghan Rath, Ian Anthony Dale and Katrina Law. That iteration also ran for 10 seasons before airing its series finale in April 2020.
