James Bond screenwriter Steven Knight is addressing claims that the next 007 has already been chosen!

The Peaky Blinders creator is writing the upcoming 26th James Bond movie, which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and feature a new actor taking over the iconic role from Daniel Craig.

Earlier this week, Gary Oldman made headlines when he claimed that a decision has already been made about who will play Bond next.

During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Today program on Tuesday (September 8), Steven was asked whether a casting decision had been made.

“I cannot speak about this subject. Much as I would dearly love to,” he responded, according to Deadline.

The interviewer then noted that Steven presumably knows the identity of the actor while writing the movie and asked whether that makes a difference.

Does Steven Knight Already Know Who the Next James Bond Is?

“It does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is, but also you have to write the character, not the actor,” Steven said.

When pressed about whether he knew who would play Bond before he started writing or found out during the process, Steven laughed and replied, “I refer you to my previous answer.”

Gary Oldman Claims the Next James Bond Has Already Been Picked

His comments come after Gary discussed the casting search while expressing his support for his Slow Horses co-star Jack Lowden.

Gary claimed during an appearance on Canada’s The Morning Show that producers have already made their choice, though the identity of the actor has not been announced. “So my fingers are crossed for Jack,” he added.

Despite Gary‘s claim and Steven‘s comments, Amazon MGM Studios has not publicly announced the next James Bond. The studio previously said it would not comment on specific details during the casting process.

“The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right,” Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement.

Jack is among several actors who have recently been linked to the coveted role.
