Warning: This post contains spoilers from the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place series finale event!
The four-part Wizards Beyond Waverly Place finale delivered a big shocker to audiences – one of the characters is dead.
At the end of season two, it was suspected that Selena Gomez‘s Alex Russo had died, but fans quickly speculated that there was no way she was actually gone, and she perhaps went into a different dimension.
In the finale event that premiered Tuesday night (August 4) on Disney Channel, it was revealed that one of the characters actually was dead.

It was confirmed earlier this year that Gregg Sulkin would reprise his role as Mason Greyback, but in the finale, we learn that he is dead.
In the episode, we see Alex reuniting with alternate versions of BFF Harper (Jennifer Stone) and Mason.
Viewers see that Alex is excited over Mason proposing to her, and urges him to get down on one knee, but he clarifies that that is not why he returned.
“I can’t propose to you. And you know why. Think about it. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. Why can’t I propose to you?” he asks her.
“Because you’re dead. You’re gone. That’s why all of this feels weird, it’s not real,” Alex replies.
He explains that he was there to help get her back to her family, and that she’s not meant to be dead yet.
In a new interview, star and executive producer David Henrie opened up about the decision to kill off Mason in the time between the original series and his return.
“We always wanted to bring Mason back, but it’s a double-edged sword any route you choose,” he told TVLine. “Let’s say they broke up, fans would be furious because they were the ‘best relationship ever.’ You know, how could you break them up and then have her go with a different guy? That doesn’t make any sense. And then why do we even bring him back? So it was a double-edged sword, and the cleanest version was to kill him.”
David also addresses the mystery surrounding Mason’s death, which isn’t explained on the show.
“Look, he was an old werewolf, and werewolves pass on,” he said. “Maybe he didn’t get enough moonlight, I don’t know. He passed on, but he will always have a special place in [Alex’s] heart, and he actually got to contribute to this story in this way.”
“He totally understood it, he totally got it,” David added, noting that Gregg was okay with it.
He shares his longtime friend and co-star said, “Yeah, it would be tough if you kept me in the picture. That would have been a tough one for fans to get their mind around.”
If you missed it, one former co-star seemingly threw shade at the finale of the sequel series.
