Scott Eastwood is sharing rare, deeply personal comments about the death of his late girlfriend, Jewel Brangman.

The 40-year-old actor opened up during the Monday (August 3) episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard about how the 2014 loss affected his grieving process. Scott said he and Jewel had been together for three or four years before she died at age 26.

Scott was working on a movie when he received the devastating call and felt unable to step away from the production.

“You can’t fly home, you’re stuck, you got to work,” he explained. “And I got the call [about Brangman] actually during a filming day and I think I did a classic defense mechanism of, ‘Just punt that to later. Compartmentalize that ‘til later.’ [It was] brutal having to deal with that and then not being able to go through that, I grieved later.”

Scott also revealed that he missed Jewel‘s funeral, although he could not remember whether filming prevented him from attending or whether he had emotionally blocked it out.

“I don’t actually remember if I couldn’t because of filming or if I just completely blacked it out, but I had to process that grief later. That was tough,” he said during the podcast episode.

Jewel was driving a 2001 Honda Civic in 2014 when she got into an accident after rear-ending a van, per the Associated Press. It was later determined that her death was caused by a defective air bag inflating with too much force and shooting out metal shrapnel.

There were later millions of vehicles recalled because of the defective airbags, leading to one of the largest automotive recalls in U.S. history.

Back in 2016, Scott made amends with Jewel‘s father after not attending her celebration of life.
