Glen Hansard has been laid to rest, one week after his untimely death at the age of 56.
A public funeral was held for the Oscar-winning musician on Tuesday (August 4) at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland.
Pallbearers were seen carrying a wicker coffin that was closely followed behind by Glen‘s widow, Maire Saaritsa.

Glen died in a single vehicle crash that happened outside of Dublin, Ireland on July 29 at around 4:30 am local time. Reuters is reporting it was a motorcycle accident.
Hundreds of people, including fans, showed up at the public funeral, with people watching from a screen outside the cathedral.

THR reports that Glen‘s wife Maire gave an emotional speech at the funeral.
“I can find no adjective for the kind of support the family has been shown this past week,” she said. “The word is hidden somewhere in the look in people’s eyes and in the depth of their good deeds. None of this could have been done without you. Most of whom I’ve not even met yet. I owe my deepest gratitude to all our good friends who have spared no effort to guide me through this time.”
Maire added, “As Glen’s wife, I want to thank him for the life we shared, searching for truth and beauty side by side, [which] we found in our son.”

Maire said that their son does not yet understand what happens, but the “bright spirit he inherited from his father is with us.”
U2‘s Bono and The Edge performed their song “Beautiful Day” during the funeral.
