Sherri Shepherd to Play the Genie in Broadway's 'Aladdin,' Becoming First Woman to Play the Role | Just Jared

Sherri Shepherd is joining the cast of Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway and she’s making history for the show!

The former The View co-host, 59, will play the Genie, becoming the first woman to ever play the role in any of Disney’s many productions of the musical.

Sherri will join the show on October 16 for a limited run through January 3.

This is Sherri‘s second time on Broadway. She previously played the evil Stepmother in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella back in 2014.

“Joining Aladdin on Broadway is an absolute dream come true and an incredible honor. The Genie is such an iconic character, and I’m beyond excited to bring my own energy, humor, heart, and a little bit of magic to this role. I hope audiences see themselves in this Genie and leave the theater feeling so much joy and inspired to believe in the impossible. To step on that stage as the first woman to ever play the Genie is something I don’t take lightly. I’m ready to rub the lamp, unleash some magic, and have the time of my life on Broadway,” she said in a statement.

Aladdin has been on Broadway since March 2014 and the role of the Genie won a Tony Award for original star James Monroe Iglehart.
