Queen Camilla is opening up about King Charles’ cancer diagnosis and keeping it a secret at first.
The 79-year-old royal sat down for a conversation in honor of the 30th anniversary of U.K. cancer charity Maggie’s.
During the conversation, she spoke about the initial announcement from Buckingham Palace that King Charles had been diagnosed with “a form of cancer” in early February 2024 after undergoing a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate in January, for whic he continues to receive treatment.
When Did Queen Camilla Learn About King Charles’ Cancer?
Camilla visited Maggie’s Royal Free to officially open the new cancer support center at the Royal Free Hospital in London in January of 2024. It was made public that he was diagnosed with cancer right afterward.
“I remember coming to see a Maggie’s just after the King being diagnosed,” she said to Dame Laura Lee, chief executive of Maggie’s.
“I almost said something but, you know, I felt that it wasn’t the time to say,” Queen Camilla continued.
“Nobody could say anything at the time, that was quite difficult. Looked at everybody who was suffering and all the relations. And I think it made me realize even more how important these places were,” she shared.
Why the Maggie’s Visit Became More Emotional for Queen Camilla
I was just longing to let it out, but, well, obviously I couldn’t,” she admitted of the visit, saying that when she spoke to the visitors there, she was almost “questioning them.”
“I didn’t want to pry too deeply. But normally when I went in, I was just talking to them. But I don’t know, I felt it was much more deep.”
