Nimrods is heading to theaters this weekend on Friday (August 14)!

Real-life couple Mason Thames and McKenna Grace co-star in the Green Day-inspired comedy.

What Is NIMRODS About?

Here’s a synopsis:

“Nimrods is a coming-of-age story about three friends (Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust) who journey to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that their band is opening for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. Their roadtrip is a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country filled with adventures, based on the exploits of Green Day and their years of living in a tour van.”

The cast includes Ignacio Diaz- Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, McKenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee and Sean Gunn. 

The film was written and directed by Jenna‘s real-life husband Lee Kirk!

Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool are producers of the movie as well.

“I’ve always wanted to do a Green Day film. God, ever since the beginning, just all my heroes have always done films, whether it was Rock ‘n’ Roll High School by the Ramones or [the Beatles’] A Hard Day’s Night, the Who’s Quadrophenia. I just wanted to do the same thing,” Billie Joe said of the movie to THR.

Critics are now weighing in with their thoughts about the movie. What are they saying about Nimrods?

Nimrods has an 88% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Guardian gave it 3 out of 5, writing: “The soundtrack — about 98 percent of which is by Green Day — is a bit one-note, but it’s got a lot of bounce. Likewise, the script is unsophisticated but enjoyably performed.”

Empire Magazine also gave it 3 out 5, saying: “Do you have the time, to listen to this film whine, about nothing and everything all at once? If so, you’ll be rewarded with a mostly successful coming-of-age teenage ode to punk.”

Time Out also gave it 3 out of 5, writing: “It doesn’t need a hardcore fan to figure out the film will end with a warm, reflective montage to the still gorgeous ‘Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)’. It’s that kind of movie: obvious but sweet-natured and enjoyable.”

Irish Times gave it 3.5 out of 5, saying: “The script…seldom strays from the familiar rhythms of the coming-of-age road comedy. Lee Kirk, who previously directed Billie Joe in Ordinary World, embraces a broad, episodic formula that delivers a chilled-out comedy with few surprises.”

The Upcoming gave it 3 out of 5, saying: “Its plot can get contrived and the jokes don’t always land, but Kirk and the cast manage to hit all the right notes to deliver a road trip film that music fans can get behind.”

The Sun gave it 2 out of 5, saying: “This overly complicated coming-of-age film is somewhat based on punk-pop band Green Day. Yet, while it features the US rockers…it lacks the ­confidence to be about them entirely, which is a shame.”

Exclaim! gave it 7 out of 10, saying: “Unless you look closely, you’d swear it was a long-lost ’90s comedy.”

Far Out Magazine gave it 3.5 out of 5, saying: “Nimrods is good-natured and consistently entertaining, if only occasionally uproarious. While the kaleidoscopic depiction of Americana succeeds in its ambiguity, there are instances of specificity that signify the talent of writer/director Lee Kirk.”

Radio Times gave it 3 out of 5, saying: “As it stands, it’s a solid enough movie with its heart in the right place and moments of well-executed joy, but viewers may be left with a nagging sense of opportunities missed. The music’s great, though.”

Nimrods hits theaters on Friday (August 14).
