Nicole Kidman is revisiting the night that made her rethink what she wanted beyond her acting career.

The actress won Best Actress for The Hours in 2003, two years after her divorce from Tom Cruise. In a new episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane, she reflected on her win and how it made her feel.

The question her Oscar couldn’t answer

During the September 10 episode, the Practical Magic 2 star explained that having her parents there didn’t erase her longing for a partner.

“Where’s my partner, someone that I can share this with?” she recalled thinking (via InStyle).

Holding the award brought her personal priorities into focus. She could appreciate the recognition while still wanting more from her life outside work. Her realization: “I’ve got to get a life”.

“I had the pinnacle of my success, and I went home and was so lonely,” Nicole added.

How she actually spent the night

Her latest comments echo an account she shared in Dave Karger’s 2024 book, 50 Oscar Nights.

In the book, Nicole says she reluctantly attended the Vanity Fair afterparty before returning to the Beverly Hills Hotel, where she ate a burger and fries with her family on the floor.

By bedtime, she was thinking about having a love to share those moments with. Looking back, she also wished she’d given herself more room to celebrate.

“I didn’t enjoy it,” she said. “I was almost apologetic, which is so stupid. I wish I could have enjoyed it more.”

If you didn’t see, Chris Rock recently talked about the Oscars and reflected on the infamous slap.
