News broke this week that Julie Andrews would not return for The Princess Diaries 3.

Fans were largely upset to learn that the 90-year-old legendary actress would not reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

She starred in the first two films, 2001’s The Princess Diaries and 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

“I think I probably passed— I think I’m retired, really, would be about the best description for that. [The film’s creative team] asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it. It was very very hard to say ‘no,’ but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride, and this one I felt would flourish very well and wouldn’t need Granny going in there at my age,” she shared with InStyle.

InStyle added that “at 90 and with arthritis, she mostly wants to keep out of the public’s view.”

Why Bridgerton is much easier for her to continue doing

If you don’t know, Julie Andrews has narrated Bridgerton‘s first four seasons on Netflix as Lady Whistledown. The latest season debuted in January.

You may be wondering why she continues doing Bridgerton, but said no to The Princess Diaries.

The mag noted that it’s “easier for her to record her Bridgerton Lady Whistledown voiceovers because she works from home.”

“I do it mostly to keep my brain alive,” she continued.
