Heart of the Beast is based on an original idea by newcomer Cameron Alexander, who makes his feature film debut with this movie.

“In film writing, they say, ‘Write what you know,’ so I just began to write down all the feelings I had about my dog, with no expectations about what I was putting down on paper,” he told UC Santa Barbara Magazine.

He told the magazine that he came up with the idea for the movie after the death of his own dog.

Movie producer Alex Ginno praised Alexander‘s writing to the magazine, saying he has “a great voice with his writing, and he’s a super smart guy and easy to work with. He’s really strong at developing story and emotion along with concepts that feel both commercial and fun.”

Is that a real dog in the movie?

Yes! A real-life German Shepherd named Uber takes on the role of Odin instead of having CGI fill in as the dog. And he truly gives an incredible performance!

Uber was the father to 10 litters and they chose three of his offspring to share the role as they all look alike.
